Pamper Yourself This Week: Nothing Fancy Sugar Scrub

Welcome to the Indie Experience: Are You an Indie or an Outie?
It's a new year and after months of strategy sessions and late nights, I am pleased to unveil our new brand name, logo and website. It's always nerve wracking to launch a new website, especially when so many people are looking. I have my fingers crossed that you have fun exploring the site and find it easy and fun to use. I invite you to take a moment to share your thoughts with me by email.

While there's a new name and logo, nothing else has changed and the strength of this organization continues to be its members in the United States and 7 other countries. It's hard to believe that there are now over 500 of them attracting thousands of people from around the globe to this website every month. Special thanks to one member in particular, Kim Baron of Fallen Muse WebWorks whose technological abilities and creative talents gave life to my vision of what we could accomplish together. I am also grateful to graphics designer Nadia Zadniprianska for translating my ideas into tangible colors, fonts and graphics.

About The New Name and Logo

When this organization started in January 2000 as the Handmade Toiletries Network (HTN), it brought together dozens of people from across the United States who were turning cosmetics making hobbies into profitable ventures. Our first logo was designed by Sabrina Evans-Laurence, a Maryland based artist whom I met when I was running my aromatherapy shop and who I am proud to say remains my friend. Red was chosen because it was bold and bright, and also the color of most lip sticks. Green leaf features added color, and an oval shape was selected because it fit nicely with a variety of different print and Internet applications. While the number of HTN members was small, the tenacity of the entrepreneurs who were a part during the early years carried their ventures, this organization and a growing industry from obscurity to solid respectability. Not only did consumers begin to take notice, but so did the business and media world, which began documenting members' extraordinary success in countless stories, both on and offline.

As time passed, it became clear that the word "toiletries" in the name confused many people. While everyone knew what toiletries were, the word sounded very old fashioned. It also made for a few funny moments when people asked me to spell it. I'd begin spelling, T-O-I-L-E-T, and once I got that far, they'd say, "Oh, like a toilet with 'r-i-e-s' on the end." Wasn't very funny back then. In January 2003, the name officially changed to the Handmade Beauty Network. The blue logo, designed by Lyndon Perry of suburban Chicago (with whom I have since lost touch) served the organization well by making the name of the organization stand out more and incorporating blue, the traditional color of respectability and trust.

Today, the new logo combines the best attributes of the first two logos. Blue still signifies strength and reliability while a green leaf motif is reminiscent of the greenery in the first logo. The special 'I' is fun and can be used on its own in a variety of applications. The lovely green leaf with its splendid curved lines and attractive color represent three things that mean a lot to our members: freshness, simplicity and nature.

The word Indie is the biggest and most exciting change. Many of us have enjoyed indie films and indie rock bands over the years. In fact, until recently the term had been used almost exclusively by independent film makers and musicians to identify their work as unique and special. Indeed, the dictionary defines indie as "an independently owned business," and also as "a person who is self-employed" or a business that is "privately owned" and not affiliated with a large company. How could one not notice that this describes all of this organization's membership?! Like always, many of the products made by members are indeed "handmade."

Indie describes both the product and the person behind it, and that is the heart of the matter and the chief reason for the change. Indie reflects the unique interplay between the products and the people who make them. Indie is an experience, and Indie Exerience is the new name of our online newsletter which has been published weekly without fail for 7 years. If you are reading this newsletter, you are definitely an Indie. Please send your outie friends this link so they can join the fun!

Let me introduce you to the Indies who joined us or renewed their membership during the holiday season. They are all Indie, here to bring you product offerings that are not only useful and beneficial, but which also embody their commitment to use their God given talents and gifts to pursue their passions, earn a fair profit and make the world a better place.

Indie Candy: Judy Marcellot of Seven Arrows Farm: Hey! We Can Do That!

Twenty seven years ago, Indies Judy (pictured) and Michel Marcellot were quite content to be living a regular life in New England. One day, they read an article in Mother Earth News called "Growing Fragrant Herbs For Profit" by Phyllis Shaudys. The pair had always loved to garden and felt most at home surrounded by woods, mountains and plants. But after reading Shaudy's article, life got kicked up a notch. The couple looked at each other and said, "Hey! We can do that!" And just like that, they quit their jobs with nothing but faith in their ability to enjoy their passion and follow our bliss.

They started by taking about 100 home-grown herb plants to a local flea market to see what happened. They sold a whopping baker's dozen, pronounced themselves a success and proceeded to open a "real" business. Now that's faith! Twenty seven years later, the land on which Seven Arrows Farm now sits was once a sun-baked, dusty horse pasture. Today, it sports a collection of beautiful gardens with lots of hidden nooks and crannies where people can sit and relax and fellowship with nature and each other.

In The Beginning ...

Over the years, Judy and Michel have done it all -- shoveled dirt, hauled rocks, dug ponds, planted trees, built gazebos, raised barns and assembled greenhouses. "We did everything a little bit at a time, as we could afford it," recalls Judy. They had found their bliss. But pretty much everyone who knew them thought they had also lost their minds. " During our early days as entrepreneurs, we looked entirely crazy to our family and friends but we were so darn  happy we hardly noticed how poor we were," laughs Judy. Before following her bliss, Judy accumulated an earned credit score as the founder and director of a social service  agency that taught English to new adult Rhode Island immigrants. This allowed her to build her business the good old American Way. She charged it. "For a number of  years, we lived on credit cards during the winter and spent the rest of the year paying them off with our harvests," says Judy. Of course this only worked if the weather cooperated and over the course of 27 years, you can imagine there were some trying times.

Suddenly Mother

Judy and Michel watched their business grow to the point where they were able to make some of their land available to other people for farming purposes. Among the people who took them up on their offer were The Hmong, people in a hill tribe from Laos that had immigrated to the United States from war torn Indo-china. These families raised  beds thick with tomatoes, mustard greens and lots of other vegetables. One day, the father of one of the gardening families asked Judy if she and her husband would be interested in raising one of their daughters. Following a ceremony which included lots of ceremonial libations, orations and the sacrifice of one chicken, Judy and her husband found themselves the proud parents of two little girls, now ages 33 and 32 and living in St. Paul, Minnesota where Judy says many members of The Hmong have resettled. While this "adoption" may seem odd, seems quite common for The Hmong. Says Judy, "Maybe it really does take a village to raise a child. It was an incredible experience, although there are huge parts of the wonderful, shamanistic culture that we will never understand because of the language barrier."

"When the girls were little, we would cart them around at night to any garden club or church group that would pay our $25 speaking fee. They would do their homework in the back of the rooms where we spoke and fall asleep in all sorts of uncomfortable chairs," recalls Judy. "Oddly enough, they don't hold these as bad memories," she continues. "Instead, they remember that we sang, told stories and laughed a lot."

Ten years after Judy and Michel began their Seven Arrows adventure they borrowed on the equity in their 1790s New England cape and built a post and beam barn which houses a four seasons Tearoom (pictured, by Michel Marcellot), a shop, classroom and activity space that is available to anyone in the community at no cost. They also have a research library filled with books, magazines and video tapes on organic gardening, garden design, herbal medicine, aromatherapy and more. Everything operates 7 days a week all year, except during the growing season when they reduce to a 4-day work week.

Judy is blessed to work with the one she loves. "I can't imagine not working with Michel," she says. "When his landscape design and construction business takes him 'off-farm,' I am never not excited to see him walking down the path to the store at the end of the day."

The Tearoom carries a variety of interesting teas and freshly brewed coffees, scones and, says Judy, "peace and harmony." Judy makes a super-emollient, anti-aging, moisturizing cream, serum and toner for maturing skin. She is also just beginning to sell products made by other IBN members. She tells me she's looking for some  interesting new soaps, so here's your chance. Judy is proud to support of IBN members, including suppliers like long members Essential Wholesale and From Nature With Love.

In Community

Judy and Michel believe in the power of living and working together in community with those around you. They offer or host tons of educational classes and workshops throughout each season. For example, the first annual Northeast Grassroots Community Herbal Convergence this past October October attracted over 100 participants, most of whom camped out in their fields, greenhouses and on the floor of the building housing the
store, tearoom, and community space. The Convergence is a bioregional gathering co-created by herbalists and activists, one of whom is Seven Arrows' practicing medicinal herbalist, Mary Blue. For example, the Herbal Education and Training Program (HEAT) will encourage herbal activism and volunteerism to replant
endangered medicinal plants on a 17 acre walking trail that is contiguous to Seven Arrows as well as throughout the larger Rhode Island and Massachusetts communities.

Telling The Story

Judy says she has an incredible staff of dedicated people at Seven Arrows. This really came in handy when they were approached by a publishing house a few years ago to write a book. The working title of the book is "That would be Enough- How Ordinary People Create Places of Peace and Tranquility," and publication is set for Fall 2007 both in the United States and in Europe, by Schiffer Publishing.

"We consider ourselves incredibly blessed to have had a customer/friend recommend us to her publisher. Jesse Turbayne has published seven books on hooked rugs and over the years, she would periodically call her editor at Schiffer and suggest contacting Michel and me to write a book on our way of life," recalls Judy. "After several years of ignoring both of them, we said okay. They asked us to write a book about 'spiritual gardening' and left it up to us how to interpret this. If the same source flows through all things, as we think it does, how do you separate the spiritual from the non-spiritual? So we wrote a book about ordinary gardeners and their connection to some larger part of the cosmos, however they named that Great Spirit or whether they named it at all. And we wrote about elements of the sacred, in general. We met some wonderful human beings
and had a great time doing it. We learned that life is supposed to be fun. It is supposed to be lived with joy."

Getting Out Of Our Own Way

Judy says that her biggest challenge as a small business owner is her own limited thinking. "We continually remind ourselves to reach for the next best thought," she says. "This doesn't mean we go directly from anger or frustration to joy, but it's a matter of simply looking for one small thing that makes us feel better. Take the dogs over to the neighbors, collect their dogs and go for a walk. Sit with some potbellied pigs -- they always make us laugh. Sit in the garden, no matter what the season. Little things can always turn your boat around," she says.

Advice, From Judy

"When people ask Michel and I for advice about starting any business (and they often do) we usually say that you can have anything you want so long as you focus on your passion, try to take worry out of the equation, and be thankful. How you 'fee'" is everything. Start with where you are. No matter where you are, or what is happening in your life, you can always find something to make yourself feel good, or at least better than where you are if you are experiencing a challenging moment, day, etc. Pet your cat. Play with the dog, the kids. Admire the sunset. These seemingly small moments add up and eventually you'll find yourself stringing together
one wonderful moment after another. It takes practice to reach for the next best feeling thought but as you do so, it becomes a habit and the "right" next step always materializes.

After many years of believing struggling and suffering were virtues we have discovered, at least for  us, that the next step in any venture is always the easy one, the one  that just seems to be the next, logical one which just "happens"  effortlessly. And suffering, like the Buddhists say, really is optional.  As we continued to practice reaching for the next best thought we found  that our positive thoughts would draw to us positive outcomes. Our  positive thoughts go out to the universe and and attract the raw  materials of our next dream. We are constantly amazed at the wonderful  things that find their way into our experience!"

Advice, From Pooh

Says Judy, "The best part is getting up in the morning and wondering, like Winnie the Pooh, what wonderful things the day will bring. Is there any other way to live?

*Judy and Michel are a great example of Joseph Campbell's advice to "Follow your bliss" and live the life you love. So when people come to Seven Arrows Farm expressing dissatisfaction with a job or a situation, Judy and Michel always say (and really believe): "Life is too short to do something you don't want to be doing for whatever reason - health insurance, a pension, the kids need to go to college, etc. Put your focus where your passion is and you can't help but be successful! Follow your bliss!

You can learn more about Seven Arrows Farm and perhaps, like me, wish you lived nearby so you could stick your toes in the pond in which sits this lovely pink water lily (photo by Michel Marcellot), at their website.
