3. Handmade Beauty Trivia Question: last week's winner was Kia Skrine of Hollywood, CA. Brenda won some Hyacinth Soap, courtesy of IBN member Bloomworks Soap Co.

Last Week's Question:
State the name of the world renowned non-profit educational institution which, under pressure, recently scaled back its "endorsement" of a new line of skincare products produced by Klinger Advanced Aesthetics.

Last Week's Answer: Johns Hopkins Medicine. The product line is Cosmedicine, the latest offering from the well known spa maven, Georgette Klinger.

This Week's Question: Soon, "realistic scent" will join surround sound and 3-D glasses to make your movie going experience even more realistic -- or something. With the release last weekend of a movie incorporating aroma into the movie-going experience, movie-goers who pay for "aroma seats" will enjoy smelling scents that correspond to scenes throughout movie. Just think of all those great animal smells to go with the Disney characters, or maybe the perfume of the leading lady as she prepares for her first date with Mr. Hunk. A paid advertisement for the featured perfume can't be far behind. What will they think of next? Anyway, I digress. The question this week is to state the of the Japanese company credited with inventing this fragrance releasing concept.

Be the first to answer and win something delicious!

Please read the contest rules here before submitting your entry. Put "TRIVIA CONTEST ANSWER" in the subject line or your answer will not be considered. While time does not permit me to respond personally to all entrants, the winner's name will be announced in the next newsletter!

4. Feature Article: The Busiest Bee
by Annette Esterheld

Having soft beautiful hands is an important goal for many of us. To IBN member Barbara Chappuis of Bee Naturals, it wasn’t just that her hands weren’t soft, they were cracked, raw and nearly bleeding. As a nurse, Barbara’s hands were constantly exposed to harmful substances in the hospital work environment.

“My hands were nearly bleeding from the constant washing I did on the job,” says Barbara, "And nothing commercially available helped.” Barbara says after she read ingredient lists on the lotions she was using on her hands, she realized they were more harmful to her hands than the harsh detergent she used to wash her hands in at the hospital. “Soap making was my hobby at the time,” she says, "So I took the knowledge I learned from soap making and created a solid lotion bar, the Bee Naturals Skin Creme Bar, in 1992.” To this day, Barbara credits herself with creating the first solid lotion bar ever made.

The Skin Creme Bar healed Barbara's hands and she began giving it to friends and family and you know what happened next. It wasn't long before such a demand was created that Barbara had no choice but to start a company. She says that the name "Bee Naturals' was a natural choice since she was using bee and natural products in the items she was developing.

Today, Barbara has expanded to over 20 different products and she is constantly developing new Bee Natural items on weekends or late at night, after putting in her time as a full-time nurse manager at a pain management company. “I have a full time job and two businesses,” says Barbara who in addition to manufacturing products also owns a retail store. “Geri Ashley is the manager of Bee Naturals store and takes care of the day to day running of the business. Geri also assists me in formulating the new products.”

From her first skin creme bar to her newest lines of Queen Bee, an array of cleansers for all types of skin, to the Bebe Bee line items for babies, Barbara uses only the finest of high quality ingredients. She says, ”There are no superfluous ingredients -- everything in Bee Naturals products has a specific therapeutic purpose. They protect and heal skin, period.” Her products contain unbleached beeswax which contains honey, a natural moisturizer, and trace minerals. According to Barbara, the beeswax in the products bonds with surface skin cells to create a protective barrier without clogging pores. Her skin creme bar comes in luscious scents like Honeysuckle, Rosemary, Lavender and Vanilla. MMMM! Sounds lovely! The Baby Balm contains beeswax, several oils and shea butter and can rid baby of chapped skin and diaper rash.

For the Queen Bee in all of us, Barbara’s queen bee facial polish, facial nectar and honey skin cleanser sound like just the trick. Honey (the kind you eat on toast) is a commodity in my house since my husband has been known to drive miles to get a certain kind of honey. As much as he loves honey, I bet he would enjoy using the honey skin cleanser.

Barbara says she uses unbleached beeswax in her products. “It still has some honey, propolis and other trace minerals that are good for the skin. Beeswax in itself does not moisturize, but it is an excellent protecting agent," Barbara explains." Barbara says that her best sellers are Skin Creme, BeBe Bee Baby Balm and lip balm,” says Barbara, who has her own factory and retail store that Geri manages. She retails her products on her website. She also sells through catalogs, her retail store in Clarksville, Missouri, and wholesale to the trade. She says the most enjoyable part of her business is getting to know her customers and reading the e-mails and letters from them expressing how much they love Bee Naturals. Barbara’s looking forward to the day, hopefully soon, when she can quit her nursing job and work full- time at Bee Naturals. In the meantime she keeps busy preparing new product lines to launch.

Barbara appreciates being part of IBN all the good business advice and information she gets from dM. Her own advice to others in the business is to: have a clear business plan and follow it! “Have good help, good business advisors, and most of all, have confidence in yourself!” says Barbara. You can be Queen Bee for a Day with your own Bee Naturals goodies at the Bee Naturals website.
