3. Handmade Beauty Trivia Question: The winner of last week's contest was Angie Tripp of St. George, Utah. Angie won a copy of "Creating A Bodycare Business by HBN member Sandy Maine!!
Last Week's Question:
When making liquid soaps, you have a choice between making the soap opaque and taking the extra
time and steps needed to make it as transparent as possible.
To make the soap transparent, you need to add an ingredient designed to lower the soap's cloud point. That is, to lower
the point at which the insolubles in the mixture coalesce and cause the soap to be cloudy.
Last Week's Answer: sequestering agents
This Week's Question: I am a wonderfully fragrant essential oil with a striking blue color. While I contain azulene (which
lends me my blue color), I am not chamomile as you may think at
first (though some say I am a reasonable substitute). I smell a little like chamomile, but I am really another essential oil
altogether. I have a fruity aroma and some say that I am helpful at easing symptoms associated with depression.
To win this week, be the first to state my common AND Latin names, and you'll win a sample of me!!
Please read the contest rules here before submitting your entry.
While time does not permit me to respond personally to all entrants, the
winner will be notified by email and their name posted at HBN's home page.
4. Handmade Beauty Product Review
~ You'll have to wait another week for this one
!!
Over the weekend, I was privileged to receive some of the most extraordinary handmade toiletries products I have ever used.
They were so wonderful that I took pictures of them to share with you, but have not yet had a chance to upload them for you to see. As a result, you'll have to wait until next week
to learn about them.
In the meantime, here are some hints:
1. they are exquisitely fragrant
2. there are lots of them
3. they made me feel special in a very personal way
4. they are individually wrapped and beautifully displayed
5. everyone who saw and smelled them wanted more
6. they served as great ways to market the manufacturer's business
7. they were personalized especially for me
8. BEST OF ALL, you can get some too!!
More next week ...
My lifelong friend from college visited me this weekend. We
did all sorts of fun things, including marveling at the
very crazy things we couldn't believe we did on campus.
But the most fun thing we did was to experiment with lots of
fresh fruits, essential oils and other cosmetics ingredients
to make wonderful facial treatments. This one, which makes
about 3 applications, was our favorite.
Ingredients
1.5 ounces fresh pineapple chunks (about 6 1/2 inch chunks)
1/2 kiwi fruit, peeled
1 teaspoon fresh whipping cream
1 heaping tablespoon kaolin (China clay)
1 heaping tablespoon powdered oats
4 drops lavender essential oil
Blending Procedure
Step 1. Pulverize pineapple chunks and kiwi in a small food processor. Add whipping cream and process further to mix in.
Step 2. Add oats and clay and process to ensure all ingredients are fully incorporated. This should produce a paste-like mixture
that will not run when a small amount is placed on the back of your hand. If it runs, add a little more clay or powdered oats
to the mix. If it's too thick to spread easily on the skin, add a bit more whipping cream.
Step 3. To use as a cleanser and face polish, place 1/3 of the mixture in the palms of your hands and massage gently onto
facial and neck skin. You can allow it to sit on the skin for about 10 minutes as a mask if you'd like. This is the best way
to enjoy the benefits of the natural alpha hydroxy acids present in the fresh pineapple.
Step 4. Store unused portion in the fridge for a few days or share it with a friend. Enjoy!!
