3. Handmade Beauty Trivia Question: Last week's winner was Cheryl Cromer of Kennesaw, Georgia. Cheryl won a bar of Bees Knees handmade soap made by HBN member Caerlon Gardens Luxury Soap!!
Last Week's Question: When essential oil of ylang ylang (Cananga
odorata) is produced, it is often distilled in "fractions". Each fraction has a different name and produces a different quality
of oil with different chemical constituents. To win this week, provide the name of the fraction which is the most prized and
valuable.
Last Week's Answer: ylang ylang extra, or some call it ylang ylang extra
superior
This Week's Question: While several essential oils are used extensively in the soap industry, I am especially popular and have been for decades. I am a hybrid of two different types of lavender, and I successfully combine the characteristics of both types of plant. I am often used to adulterate true lavender oil, and true lavender oil is one of the oils from which my hybrid version resulted. To win this week, be the first to state two things: (1) the name of the other oil of which I am a hybrid result, and (2) my name.
Be the first to correctly answer this week's 2-part question and
win
a a generous sample of sona champa attar, courtesy of HBN member White Lotus Aromatics!!

5. Create The Life You Love Business Tip
Finder's Keepers? Not!!
by Donna Maria
We've all heard it before ... "finders keepers, losers weepers."
Well, I guess that phrase worked well in the playground when all we had to fight over was a Snickers
Bar or the latest
flavor of Pixie Stix. Not so in the business world, and especially
in the world of copyright law as it applies to small companies
doing business on the Web.
As an attorney, I have witnessed countless situations where
unscrupulous, unthinking people have made the mistake of assuming
that just because something is on the Internet, it must be
in the public domain, and thus, free for them to appropriate
in any way they wish. But "finders keepers" has no place in the
realm of copyright law, and if you have a Web site, marketing
brochure or any other written material used to market your
brand in the industry, you should take the time to learn basic
principles of copyright law and be prepared to take action if
someone misappropriates your copywritten material. This is
especially important if your business is conducted online where
copyright infringement for things such as exact recipes with
instructions, essential oil and raw materials descriptions,
product photographs and drawings and other protected works
are so very easy to steal and manipulate.
Copyright protection extends to all original works of authorship.
Contrary to popular belief, you do not have to include the word
"copyright" or the symbol for "copyright" (a "c" in a circle)
in order to enjoy copyright protection for your works of authorship.
Copyright protection automatically attaches to your work, whether
you publicly note that it is copywritten or not. That being
said, it is always worth the time it takes to provide public notice
of your copyright since it can't hurt to use the word "copyright"
and/or the "c" in a circle to place people on notice that the
specific material is copywritten.
As the owner of a copyright, you are entitled to a variety of
rights, including the exclusive right to reproduce, publicly
display and distribute the copyrwitten work. Copyright infringement
is a criminal act punishable by fines and imprisonment. If someone
has infringed your copyright, you may be entitled to damages
including any lost profits.
Many people think that they can copy copyritten material as they
please, and that, so long a they are not profiting financially
from that copying, or so long as they give credit to the author,
it's a "fair use" of the copyritten material. This is another
popular yet dangerous and incorrect misconception. Fair use allows copying of
work for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting,
teaching, scholarship or research. However, courts interpret each
of claim of fair use on a case-by-case basis and the decisions in
this area of the law are very fact specific. One court may find for
the copyright owner, while another will find for the alleged
infringer on the exact same fact pattern. Additionally, giving
credit to the copyright owner does not insulate an infringer from liability.
Remember that although individual cases will vary, it's generally
the actual copying without permission, whether credit is given
or not, that gives rise to the copyright violation.
When in doubt about whether you can copy someone else's work, err
on the side of caution. Don't copy it at all or simply ask the
author if you can use the work for a certain period of time with
a credit to them and a link to their Web site. Some will agree,
some won't, but at least you have protected yourself.
Though federal and state copyright registration is not a prerequisite to
copyright protection, it offers certain benefits, including
making a public record of the copyright. Obtaining copyright
protection is easy and inexpensive. For further information,

questions at donnamaria@indiebeauty.com.
7. Handmade Beauty Product Review by Donna Maria
~ Sweet Orange Face & Body Mist by Country Herbals by Andrea
$12.98 | 4 ounces
Now that summer has arrived in full force, I find myself
trying to figure out ways to beat the heat. Where I live
near Washington, DC, the summers are known for sweltering
temperatures and unbearable humidity ... and early July is
just the beginning!
That's why I'm glad I recently discovered Country Herbals'
Sweet Orange Face & Body Mist. Not only is sweet orange
one of my favorite essential oils, but this product is
packed with aloe and glycerin, so it not only lift my spirits but
also treats my skin.
Downtown DC is always at least 6 or 7 degrees hotter than
the suburbs where I live, so I cart this mist downtown
with me when I go. Since I try not to use the air conditioning in my
home unless it's absolutely necessary (I like to hear the sounds of the birds tweeting and the leaves on
the trees as they sway lightly in a much needed breeze,
and I like to save money!), I have also been using this
product as a refresher after a cool afternoon or evening shower. I
especially like it after it's been refrigerated for an hour or so before
using. So refreshing!! It absorbs quickly and the naturally fresh and happy
citrus aroma lingers long
enough to make a difference in my mood for hours to come.
You can find this lovely summer product and tons of other
skincare treats at Country Herbals by Andrea's fantastic newly
designed Web site, which you can visit through HBN's Online Member Directory.
7. Handmade Beauty Product Recipe: Raspberry Rose Face & Body Toner
Note: last week's recipe for Vanilla Butter Balm omitted
the .03 ounces of beeswax. I apologize for the inconvenience.
You can read get the correct recipe (and find dozens more) here.
Now, for the newest toner in my aromatic pantry...the Raspberry
Rose Face & Body Toner! Raspberries are one of my favorite
summer fruits. They add a delicious tart sweetness to salad
vinaigrettes and marinades. Even better, they are high in
Vitamins A and C, which makes them a fabulous addition to my
Raspberry Rose Bace & Body Toner!!
Ingredients
10 ripe, fresh red raspberries
1/3 cup distilled water
1 tablespoon vegetable glycerin
1/4 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
1/4 teaspoon kaolin (China clay)
1/8 cup rose hydrosol (I use Bulgarian rose alba)
Blending Procedure
Step 1. Pulverize 8 raspberries in small food processor.
Step 2. Add water and process further until watery and no
chunks of fruit are visible. You'll still see the seeds.
Eat the 9th raspberry.
Step 3. Add apple cider vinegar, kaolin and hydrosol and
process further until ingredients are fully combined. Eat the
10th raspberry.
Step 4. Using a cheese cloth or muslin bag, strain the bright
pink liquid from the raspberry seeds and pulp. You may need to
do this 2 times to make sure only liquid is left behind.
Discard the seeds and pulp. To use, cleanse skin and pat away
excess moisture. Apply Raspberry Rose Face & Body Toner
using a cotton ball and gentle, upward motions. You could also
put it in a spritzer bottle and dispense it that way. I prefer
the spritzer bottle because it makes it easy to use all over
my skin, not just on my face. Follow with light moisturizer.
Refrigerate and use in a week's time.
