3. Handmade Beauty Trivia Question: There was no winner from last week, so here's the question again, along with a hint!!
Last Week's Question: I help connect you to the physical world, serving as a sort of foundation to assist in your growth
and evolution. I am associated with the most dense parts of your body, responding quickly to certain essential oils
including cedar, cypress ad myrrh. My element is earth and I correspond to the base and heel of your foot. What am I?
Additional hint: I am associated with the color red.
Be the first to correctly answer this week's question and win a generous sample
of skin loving shea butter, courtesy of HBN member BioChemica!
**Additional contest rule!! You must put "Trivia Contest" in the subject line of your answer. Please read the existing
contest rules (unchanged) before submitting your entry here.
While time does not permit me to respond personally to all entrants, the winner will be notified by email and their name posted at the link above.
4. Handmade Beauty Recipe: Honey Butter Belly Salve
Last week's recipe was for a belly cream that contains oils and water to make
a creamy emulsion. If you missed that
recipe, you can read it here. By the way,
thank you to all of the readers who sent me congratulatory notes on the
baby!!
One reader wrote me requesting a recipe containing no water. Ask and you shall receive!! This formula is very much like
a salve and packed with ingredients like cocoa butter and lanolin which help
minimize stretch marks caused by either significant weight loss, heredity,
pregnancy, etc. (Guess why I'm using it ... haven't been losing any weight
lately!!)
Honey Butter Belly Salve has the consistency of soft petrolatum and spreads into my belly like a charm ... and feels great too!
I have also discovered another great way to use this product. One of the
many changes that occur in a woman's body during pregnancy is a marked
increased in blood flow. As a result, pregnant women (me included) sometimes
experience nose bleeds. For me, I know a nose bleed may be on its way when
my nose begins to feel dry. Since I increased my intake of fresh water, this
side effect has subsided significantly. However, when my nose does feel a
bit dry, I use a cotton swab to place a bit of this product into my nostrils
to soothe the blood vessels and decrease dryness. It works
wonderfully, and I feel much better using this product I made myself rather than the
petrolatum recommended by my physician!!
20 grams cocoa butter
40 grams coconut oil
6 grams lanolin
2 grams honey
4 grams emulsifying wax
4 grams beeswax
Step 1. Combine all ingredients in a Pyrex measuring cup and place the cup in a hot water bath to melt the cocoa butter
and other ingredients. After the cocoa butter is nearly completely melted, remove from heat.
Step 2. Stir the mixture with a pop sickle stick to ensure the mix. Then, pour into clean jars and allow to cool completely
before using. Enjoy!!

5. Donna Maria's Aromatherapy Workshops At Smile Herb Shop!
This month, I will conduct two aromatherapy workshops at the Smile Herb Shop in College Park, Maryland.
For
registration details, call Smile at (301) 474-8791.
June 16, 2001 – Introduction to Aromatherapy
12:00 to 2:00pm, includes Q&A and book signing
Review of essential oil properties and extraction techniques, safety information, proper dilution methods and choosing carrier
oils. Students will leave with their own personal aromatherapy blend made in class, plus a working knowledge of aromatherapy
and are able to distinguish between 100% essential oil, fragrance oils and other types of scented materials. An informative
handout with an extensive reading list is provided.
June 30, 2001 – Making Aromatherapy Creams & Lotions
12:00 to 2:00pm includes ½ hour Q&A and book signing
Building on the first workshop, we apply the knowledge of essential oils to make moisturizers from scratch using natural
ingredients to soothe and nourish the skin. We cover basic skin type analysis so students can select the oils most
appropriate for their skin. Includes demonstration of cream-making process, and creation of an original recipe suitable
for most skin types. Students leave with their personal aromatherapy cream blend. An informative handout with an
extensive reading list is provided.
