2. Handmade Beauty Trivia Question ~ Last week's winner was Ann-Marie Faiola of Bellingham, Washington. Ann-Marie won a 4 oz. bottle of rose hydrosol and generous samples of spearmint and peppermint essential oils.
In celebration of black history month, this month's questions feature men and women of black African descent who encourage and inspire us.

Last Week's Question: In 1900, this son of slaves who was born in 1868 in South Carolina, founded an independent political subdivision in the State of Georgia, fulfilling his lifelong dream of establishing a self-sufficient and self-sustaining black American community. His son, who shared his name, founded one of the first African-American cosmetics manufacturing firms in the US.

Last Week's Answer: William Sherman Cannon, the Cannolene Cosmetics Co.

This Week's Question: Born into poverty in the southern US, this man founded his cosmetics company in 1935. His controversial business philosophies and unashamed opinions about the reasons why black-owned American businesses failed to thrive earned him great notoriety. They also became his demise when the vast majority of black Americans boycotted his businesses into bankruptcy. Undaunted, he restructured his companies to make them profitable, and died toward the end of the 20th century a wealthy and dignified man.

To win this week, be the first to state the name of the man and his cosmetics company and win a bar of handmade herbal Rosemary Soap from Sunflower Soaps & Sundries.  Your prize will be enclosed in a lovely heart shaped organza drawstring pouch from The Packaging Goddess (see this week's product review below).

Please read the contest rules here before submitting your entry.

3. Handmade Beauty Product Review by Donna Maria

~ Exquisite Packaging by The Packaging Goddess

Most HBC beauty product reviews focus on cosmetics and soaps that beautify and pamper the face and body. This week's focus is on products that beautify and pamper the products themselves.

"Yes, Virginia, packaging is everything." Well, maybe not everything, but it certainly makes a big difference! A lovely gift enclosed in a lovely package is really two gifts in one ... how many times have you watched someone receive a gift and heard them say, "oooh, the wrapping is so pretty I don't want to open it!" People appreciate the way a gift is wrapped as much as the gift itself, and exquisite packaging helps you convey the message that a gift is extra special. For wrapping that strikes the perfect balance between simple and exquisite, you will find your Perfect Package at The Packaging Goddess.

By far my favorites are the beautiful sheer organza pouches with durable yet delicate drawstrings for easy closure. There is a rectangular shape and lovely little heart shapes as well, in a variety of colors. The rectangles have a two-tone color scheme and each drawstring is topped off with a pretty jewel toned bead with a pearl - they are perfect for gifts for the dearest friends you have. The heart shaped pouches have easy to close silk ribbons, and this week's prize is enclosed in a pretty ivory colored one!

The Perfect Packages are available from The Packaging Goddess, and you can contact her by visiting HBN's Online Member Directory.

4. Business Tip of the Month: Power Up! ~ Recycling Your Business Success

Our first Power Up! article focused on Patience. In December, we focused on how the Power Up! strategies of organization and weeding can help your business remain focused on the
thoughtful pursuit of its goals. Then last month, we focused on the Power Up! Principle of Excellence in business.

If you missed those articles, you can click on the Power Up! Principle as follows to read all about it:Patience, Organization & Weeding, Excellence.

This month, we focus on the principle of Recycling Your Success. John Paul DeJoria of John Paul Mitchell Systems (of hair care products fame) once said that "success unshared is failure." While I was not unfamiliar with the concept, I had never heard it put so succinctly before. And since being in business for myself, I have come to learn that he was right.

The act of recycling your business simply involves making a conscious effort to ensure that your success is shared with those less fortunate than you. There are at least 3 reasons why it is good business to recycle your success in this way.

1. Recycling Your Success Benefits Others
2. Recycling Your Success Brings Joy To You
3. Recycling Your Success Builds Brand Name Recognition & Good Will

1. Recycling Your Success Benefits To Others. Wealth without responsibility becomes a drain on society. The existence of your business and the gifts you can give as a business person can be the one thing that helps another human being make it through to the next day. You need not
look far to find persons who can benefit from your gifts - your local church, a shelter in your city, a national non-profit organization and many more. Business is not simply about being successful. It's also about being significant. You can have a successful business without sharing your wealth, but you cannot have a significant business without sharing your wealth.

2. Recycling Your Success Brings Joy To You. Hopefully, you don't have to search back too far in your life to recall a time when your gift brought joy to someone else. Whether it was an elaborate and perhaps expensive gift, or a simply a small yet heartfelt token of your appreciation, if you gave it to someone else, it probably made you as the giver feel at least as good as it made the "givee" feel. If you have had a rough week or are experiencing a time of sadness or depression in your life, recycle some of your success in the form of a financial gift or the gift of your time
to someone in need. You'll be glad you did, and you'll find that your spirits are lifted as you invest yourself into the life and spirit of another person.

3. Recycling Your Success Builds Brand Name Recognition & Good Will. The NFL & The United Way, Elizabeth Taylor & the Whitman Walker Clinic, Denzell Washington & Boys &
Girls Clubs of America ... modern history is filled with businesses and notable people that have recycled their success while at the same time building their brand name and good will. As a business owner, you need to be keenly aware of the value of your business. This involves not only
knowing how much money you have in the bank and the value of your inventory and receivables, but also, how much good will and brand recognition you have built. The more you choose to recycle your business, the more brand recognition and good will you have, and thus, the more valuable your business becomes ... both to you and to society at large.

Next month tip will feature hints on making your business unique. Standing out from the crowd in a market flooded with small businesses is more important that ever. Don't miss these 10 tips on developing your own unique style that separates you from the masses!

5. Handmade Beauty Recipe ~ Kiss Appeal Lip Mask
Last week's issue featured a recipe for a great face scrub that also doubles as a nutritious facial mask. If you missed it, you can read it here.

This week, I'm featuring my recipe for Kiss Appeal Lip Mask, to pamper and soothe the lips. Before my brother's wedding last week, one of the bridesmaids gave us a small pot of lip mask to apply to our lips before putting on our lipstick and make-up. While it felt really good going on, it was a bit drying (perhaps in part because I left it on too long), so I decided to whip up my own using the goodies I have on hand. This Lip Mask is soothing and I found it to be especially nice after warming it in the microwave about 10 seconds before using.

Ingredients
1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon kaolin (China clay) or other cosmetic clay (I do not recommend green clay because it is probably too drawing for delicate lips)
1 teaspoon emu oil
1 teaspoon honey
1 tablespoon rose hydrosol

Blending Procedure & Use
Measure clay and set aside. Measure rose hydrosol and warm in the microwave about 20 seconds. Add emu oil and honey and stir well to incorporate. Add liquid mixture to clay and stir
with a pop sickle stick to form a smooth paste. Use the pop sickle stick to apply to lips and leave on for about 2 minutes, no more or it may dry your lips out. Rinse well with warm water, blot excess water gently and apply lip balm. A good one is Vita-Lips by Rainbow Meadow here.

If you have a suggested recipe or trivia question you'd like to share, send it to Jenn@HandmadeBeauty.com. If we use either in an upcoming issue, we'll credit you!!
