2. HOW PAIGE BREEZES THROUGH HER GIFT LIST BY SURFING HBN's SITE
"Since learning about the Handmade Beauty Network, I have used it as a source of gifts for family and friends. I use the Newsletter as a resource and made my first purchase of handmade toiletries from Sally's Soaps in Virginia. Those bars went to a stepdaughter in New York, an elderly friend in Florida and teenagers in two Virginia cities, and all were delighted to receive a bar of "Key West" or "Sunshine" during the last days of winter! I have kept a bar of "Key West" for myself, but it has never made it into the shower; it sits among my washcloths in the bathroom, keeping them beautifully scented. Now that HBN's Web site offers the chance to shop for gifts by state, I used that option prior to visiting my sister-in-law in Philadelphia last month. Searching in Pennsylvania, I selected Country Herbals by Andrea, ordered several items and presented them in a small bag as a hostess gift. My sister-in-law immediately used the "Painfreeze" on her ankle bug bites and reported that the itching stopped and her ankles felt really soothed." Paige McMahon, Bethesda, Maryland.
3. HANDMADE BEAUTY TRIVIA QUESTION ~ The winner from June 11 was Diana Wegh of Fruta, Colorado. Diana won a copy of Rosemary Gladstar's "Herbal Remedies for Men's Health".
LAST WEEK'S QUESTION: The Hyatt Regency Las Vegas Resort uses it in its luxurious full body wrap spa treatment. HBN member Moon and Stars Enchanted Soap mixes it in one of their most popular handmade soaps with Geranium and Lemon essential oils. What is this versatile natural material that has made such an impact on the beauty and spa scene? Here are a few hints ... it's mined from beneath the shafts of the Atlas Mountains. It has detoxifying, cleansing, degreasing and astringent properties. You can add other natural ingredients to it such as milk, aloe vera gel, floral waters (also known as hydrosols) and essential oils to create personalized face and body masks at home. Next week, we'll feature a recipe for making a facial mask using this ingredient.
LAST WEEK'S ANSWER: Rhassoul clay from the Atlas Mountains in Morocco.
THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: This natural, indigestible, water-soluble fiber is used to thicken and stabilize food products. It is also used in spa products to create soothing skin care treatments, most notably face and body masks. Available in liquid or powder form, this product is present in large quantities in several fruits, including apples, peaches and plums. Next week's Aromatic Beauty Recipe will incorporate this product into a luscious treat for your face.
Be the first to provide the correct name of this natural product and win an autographed copy of "Making Aromatherapy Creams & Lotions" by Donna Maria!!

4. HANDMADE BEAUTY PRODUCT REVIEWS
I love using fresh food products to cleanse and tone my skin. It's so much fun to combine good-for-you "freshies" like avocados, almonds, apples and fresh juices to make truly natural skin care products. It's even better when you can find some already made for you. Such was the case when I discovered 310's line of Fresh Fare products a few months ago. I'll be reviewing them over the next few weeks. 310 products can be purchased in small single use quantities and this is what I received. The products came nicely packaged in a Styrofoam cooler with a cool pack to keep them fresh during the overnight shipping. There was also an expiration date on the inner container, which was very helpful.
Banana Mint Face Mask ~ 5.3 oz. ~ $22.00
This product contains visible bits of banana, along with water, clay, sweet almond oil, glycerin and peppermint
essential oil. After I washed my face and patted it dry, I applied the mask. It smelled delicious, though it was a little
hard to spread smoothly and evenly onto my skin. I would have added a bit more water to it if I had a container and
spoon handy for stirring at the time; I think this might have made it a bit smoother. Per the instructions, I rested for
several minutes after applying the mask to my face and neck. It felt tingly, due I'm sure to the peppermint essential
oil. It seemed to do a good job at tightening my pores and my skin felt great after I rinsed it off. I followed it with a
bit of Alexandra Avery's Underactive Skin Elixir as a light moisturizer (see product review, 6/9/00).

Honey Hand & Foot Mask ~ 6.2 ounces ~ $21.00
This sunny yellow product was loaded with the scent of cinnamon essential oil ... it reminded me of the holiday
season. According to the directions, I massaged it all over my hands and feet. It felt so good going on and I could
feel the product scrubbing away at dead skin. Afterward, my skin felt smooth and soft. The cinnamon essential oil
smelled great, but seemed a bit odd for a skin care product. Be sure to use this product over a large bowl or tub (I
have a really huge bath tub), or spread disposable plastic around because the oats and almonds tend to fleck off into
surrounding areas. The egg yolk helped moisturize my skin while the oats and almonds provided light exfoliation.
Honey Hand & Foot Mask was fun to massage into my hands and feet because the oats and almonds suspended in
the egg yolk made the texture very soothing. I would buy this product again for the soothing feeling alone!

5. AROMATIC BEAUTY FOOD RECIPE ~ Slammin' Lime Back Spread
Keep the often neglected skin on your back in tip top summer shape using this astringent blend of ingredients. The honey is soothing to the skin while the lime juice and essential oils work wonders, especially on oily skin ~ the smell is slammin'! The Rhassoul clay is astringent and draws impurities from the skin's surface. If you don't have Rhassoul clay, you can use whatever cosmetic clay you have on hand. This mask is especially nice to use after cleansing with an exfoliant such as Cool Oats Cleanser (see www.donnamaria.com).
Ingredients
4 tablespoons of Rhassoul clay (available at many natural foods stores)
1 teaspoon of liquid, runny honey (you may wish to warm it slightly if it has thickened)
1 teaspoon fresh lime juice
3 tablespoons (more or less) aloe vera gel or distilled water
2 drops of lime essential oil
Blending Procedure
Measure the clay into a small bowl and set aside. Combine the liquid ingredients in another small bowl and stir well
to combine. Add the liquid to the clay in two stages, stirring well after each addition. If the mixture is too dry to
spread easily, add more aloe vera gel or water. f it is too runny, add a bit more clay to thicken it a little. Be sure to
stir the product really well to incorporate the essential oil. Lie on your stomach and have a friend apply a layer of the
mask across your entire back. Rest for about 10 minutes and then rinse well. Follow with a spritz or two of
rosewater or your favorite toner and a light moisturizer. Enjoy!!
